Recognised as a Level 1 artist in China, Master Zhang Dahua is both celebrated and acclaimed as a national icon for his mesmerising work and his fundamental role in founding philosophical zen art as we know it.
Born in Beijing in March 1059, Zhang Dahua has been a disciple of the modern Chinese painting master Qi Baishi and of Mr. Qi’s successor, Mr. Lou Shibai His learnings with both of these greats impactfully mapped the journey for his career.
Zhang Dahua is of the clear belief that painting penetrates the realm of art alone and takes on the role of an expression of life philosophy. His work accomplishes this in the simplest of visual languages – with brush strokes that tell a unique story with every mark they make.
His remarkable use of colour is highly considered and delicate, yet impactful through its transition from faint to vibrant in its skilled application.
Zhang Dahua’s understanding and appreciation of the original mystics of the traditional Chinese paintings of the past enables his distinct philosophical expression that has earned his work a global following and dedicated collectors alike.
Throughout the country, Zhang Dahua is revered for his unique creative contribution to Chinese culture and for his role in sharing that culture abroad.
