Rex Turnbull is a New Zealand born artist whose work has been described as ‘a highly considered journey into intricate and intimate storytelling’.
A Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, London, Turnbull has exhibited to wide acclaim throughout New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Germany, UK and Switzerland.
Turnbull’s work poignantly places the human subject matter in environments that traverse urban spaces through to rural settings – always with a sensibility that evokes emotions of isolation and warmth in equal measure.
His revered portrait work draws the audience into the very soul of the subject through a distinct aesthetic and disciplined approach that firmly places Rex as technique-driven artist in a league of his own.
Rex has been a finalist in numerous national awards and was the winner of the Kelliher Award in Dunedin, NZ. Kelliher Award – the NZ equivalent of Wynne Prize.
Contemporary on Crown is honoured to curate a solo exhibition of Rex Turnbull’s work in 2018..
