From its earliest days as the slums of the city fringe awash with bootleggers, artists and whores, Surry Hills remains the epicentre of creativity in Sydney.
After various incarnations throughout the past 8 decades, this four-storey terrace now hosts Sydney’s newest contemporary gallery.
The gallery’s fluid curatorial nature allows us to dedicate the entire 4-level space for extensive solo shows, or curate a show on each floor across four varying artists.
Contemporary on Crown pushes the boundaries of exhibition spaces. We believe that modern art should not be restricted to sterile and stark surrounds, but instead be showcased as art would be displayed and enjoyed at home.
By creating a gallery space adorned with home furnishings, we bring art back into a domestic context. Facilitated by this curatorial direction we allow audiences to envision how each piece might look in their home – a place where art truly belongs.
Without art, life simply fades to grey. So our ethos is to ensure art finds its way into everyday people’s lives and homes. We do this by inviting a diverse range of artists to show with us, ensuring a broad spectrum of medium and work is shared.
More than curators of fine exhibitions, we see ourselves as custodians of the artists’ vision. The trust that artists place in us is never taken for granted, but rather honoured with an approach and ethics that enriches the exhibition experience.
“ Creativity is contagious. Pass it on” – Albert Einstein.
